ROUND 2 ROUND-UP
Union returned from their trip to the Far East with a comfortable three points, and three goals, in the bank. Rico Cocci was again the star, bagging his first GPFL hat trick against a Hong Kong Traders outfit that couldn’t handle his lethal pace and world class finishing. With five goals in two games, Cocci has taken this new league in his stride. What odds on him continuing his form when Metro come calling?
For their part, Paris Metro completed a consecutive three goal margin victory at home, routing Johannesburg Rush 4-1. Their job was made easier after Huig Wilderink‘s rash challenge saw the Rush reduced to ten men only minutes after Metro had got back on level terms after the visitors’ early opener. From that moment on it was one way traffic – Alberto Pedroso dos Santos racked up a hat trick of his own, before centre forward, Tim Ludwig, completed the scoring.
London City and Olympia Munchen both won by the odd goal to maintain their perfect starts to the season. Substitute Dorian Gross won it late on for London, after Ciudad de Madrid had recovered from a two-goal, half time deficit, thanks to a quick-fire double from Ranieri Lettiere. Olympia fell behind early in Sydney, but were ahead just after the hour mark and held on for a narrow win over surprise package, Harbour City.
LA Icons took their goal tally to eight in two games during their win at Shanghai Pearl. Bjorn Goudier netted his second brace in two games, but it was left to Adalberto Cortes to settle this end to end encounter with twelve minutes remaining.
Esportivo Rio and al-Qāhirah Stars both edged home following 1-0 victories. Marcelo Justo Pinto‘s strike eight minutes into the second half settled in for the Stars, over a determined Toronto Athletic, while Rio were indebted to their goalkeeper for taking all three points. Vinicius Pires Cordeiro‘s massive clearance in the 90th minutes somehow made it past Baler Caglar in Constantinople FC‘s goal.
The other three games all finished level. It ended goalless in Singapore, while Emirates United and Eternal Roma took home a goal and a point each from their encounter in Abu Dhabi. Greg Lockhart‘s double had New York Capitals two up in just over 20 minutes at Japan’s National Stadium, but Tokyo-Yokohama United clawed back the deficit thanks to Richard Casey and Osvaldo Prado de Avila.
